This is a getaway weekend for us and a celebration. After 20 years of waiting, “The Simpsons Movie” finally was released today. And we were at the first showing at 9:30 am this morning… in Asheville, North Carolina. This is a special place for us: Tom lived here twice, one of our wedding receptions was here and we’re seriously considering retiring here. We were long due for a trip to visit. We did stay here overnight last June, but that doesn’t hardly count.

Of course, we had to make a pilgrimage to Jose and Dolores’ Mexican Restaurant. Tom was a regular here when he lived in Asheville twelve years ago and I got to try it about 10 years ago. It hasn’t changed. The food wasn’t exactly diet friendly, but it’s not every day we can eat there.

So my rationalization is that it’s been a crappy week (though leaving town tomorrow night is a step in the right direction), but on the drive into work from weigh-in (406.something/401.something at home) I stopped for breakfast at a Burger King. Sausage, Egg & Cheese, large hash brown, decaf. Nutritional nightmare. 990 calories. What’s that, 2 days of shakes? Good job there, Spanky.

Can’t tell you how many of these I’ve eaten over the years — maybe after I see my weight go up in the next couple of days I’ll actually be able to calculate how much of my lard ass is attributable to that.

No big surprise: the biscuit was ok, but the hash browns sucked. And that’s not a criticism of the way they were cooked — I think they were cooked the way they were supposed to be, but that’s the problem. They tasted greasy. It’s all I could taste. I’m sure it’ll be blowing through my gut soon soon. That should be exciting.

Nothing uplifting here. How to make a crappy week crappier. And probably soon to be literal an not figurative.

Shakes for me for the forseeable future

Just a quick post today. Back to ball games tonight and lots of things to do before I head there at 5:30. Last night, both Tom and I were up way too late finishing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but it was so worth it! Tomorrow is the official weigh-in day again and we leave on Thursday for Asheville. Lots to do, lots to do!

When Tom and I did this liquid diet five years ago, we learned how much of eating out is the actual act or performance of dining out. The server greets you, takes your drink order, brings your drinks, takes your food order, brings your food and then later brings the check. And, if you’re a regular, the server may stop by to chat too. Meanwhile, you take in the atmosphere, check out your fellow diners and, at places like Shakey’s Pub and Grub, you play trivia.

Before we went back on the liquid diet, we went out to eat two or three times a week. Now, it’s once a week at most when we’re not traveling. And the one meal out is sacred. Well, we have a ballgame tomorrow which is our traditional Shakey’s night. At first, we were just, “Okay, no Shakey’s this week”, but about 1:00 pm today, I realized that I needed my Shakey’s night. A quick call to Tom showed that he felt the same way. We’ll still be making wise decisions, but it will be “eating out”! Woo hoo!

…I’m making a blog post. In a lot of ways it’s been a tough week. Frustration is definitely an eating trigger for me, and this week has had no shortage of it. While working a ballgame Friday night I smelled the Shane’s Rib Shack BBQ buffet at the park and it was really difficult not to partake. Weekends are the easily the roughest, though. It’s working, though. I’m down to 403.6 as of this morning. Not too shabby.

We survived two days of 100% compliance. And given the chaos of yesterday’s ball games, it was touch and go there for a while. But, when I weighed in this morning, I had dropped another pound. Just 4.6 to go to get 20 pounds lost.

Just a lazy day planned for today. The weather is gorgeous so a drive in the country may be in store for us. We’ve already enjoyed the leftover pad thai and we’ll have the light caesar salad this evening. I also introduced Tom to the joy of coffee Nutrimed shakes. Very, very tasty.

Well, one day down and one day to go with 100% compliance. And the scale said 263.6 this morning so I’ve got a good start towards my goal of getting as close as I can to 20 pounds lost by Wednesday’s weigh-in. And even though this weekend won’t be 100% compliant, we already know what we’re having: leftover pad thai with a light caesar salad on Saturday night and then a grilled chicken breast filet with another light caesar salad. It’s amazing how good those will taste after days of just shakes. Though I must admit that the soups are pretty good. The cream of mushroom is tasty and filling. And a chopped green onion adds crunch and flavor.

Well, I lost another 1.8 pounds for a total of 13.2 and Tom is down another 4 for a total of 24. We’re still searching for how to best handle Tuesday nights at Shakey’s, but we discovered at Mai Thai last night that it’s time to start splitting meals again. That was a happy discovery, though we do have some awesome leftovers for Saturday night. Today is suppose to be a ball game, but the weather forecast is not looking good so we’ll see. I’m shooting for 100% compliance today and tomorrow. That’s another “we’ll see”.

Update: The game was indeed cancelled so we’ll try to get photos taken tonight.

It was a great weekend in Brown County and we didn’t go hog wild, but we weren’t exactly perfect.

So what did we learn from traveling this weekend:
Number one – never travel without the cooler and the little 8 oz. bottles of water.
Number two – when choosing a fast food grilled chicken sandwich, Wendy’s is your best choice and Burger King is your worst.

The scale was up .2 of a pound this morning. Hopefully, that will be gone and have taken some friends with it tomorrow morning.
